When God created, He wanted relationship. We can see the intentionality of this design as soon as Adam is formed from dust and Eve from a rib. Here, we see relationship lived out as Adam and Eve are walking with God in the cool of the day and can recognize the sound of His steps.

Genesis 3-4
Doubting the truthfulness of God’s word
In Genesis 3:1 we see that the first attack of the serpent was throwing God’s Word at Eve, making her question the validity of it. Satan has always tried to get people to question and turn from the Word of God. If he can’t get us to turn from it completely, he will try to get us to doubt it.
Have you ever doubted the truthfulness of God’s word? What is your response when you have doubts (2 Timothy 3:16-17)?
Walking with God can provide a way out
Once the serpent started talking to Eve, she should have rebuked him (Jude 1:9). Instead, she engages in conversation with him leading to sin. God will always provide a way out when we are tempted. Eve could have rebuked the devil and run the other way, but she allowed the conversation to continue.
Sometimes it is easy to stay in a situation that could lead to sin. Was there a time that you messed around with temptation, and what did God teach you through it (1 Corinthians 10:13)?
The sound of walking with God
Genesis 3:8 says Adam and Eve heard God walking in the garden in the cool of the day. The fact that they knew the sound of God walking in the garden means that He had walked with them before. God loves us and desires to be in a relationship with us, just as he walked with Adam and Eve, He desires to walk with us.
How does it change your perspective knowing that God walked with Adam and Even in the garden (James 4:8)?
Hearing the voice of God
In Genesis 4:7, Cain is presented with the truth of doing what is right and the consequences of doing what is wrong. Even after hearing the voice of God, Cain choses sin over relationship.
Have you heard the voice of God and ignored Him? What are some ways to not only listen to God, but also obey (Jeremiah 42:5-6)?
God offers chances of forgiveness
In both these stories after sin has occurred, God asks a question. He does not ask because He needs to know the answer, but because He is giving another chance for us to do the right thing. God is allowing us to turn back to Him and acknowledge the wrong we have done. But in both cases, they choose to lie to God. Once sin is committed it becomes easier to sin more in an attempt to cover it up.
Have you tried to lie to God and cover up sin? Do you need to confess your sins to God now (1 John 1:9)?
Reflect on Walking with God
What does it mean to be walking with God? How can you walk with God today?
