Genesis 10-12
A lineage of human’s disobedience and God’s faithfulness
Genesis 10 tells the lineage of Noah’s sons. Many of these descendants become powerful nations and we will continue to read about them as the story of the Bible unfolds. Interestingly, chapter 10 actually occurs after chapter 11, and that is why Genesis 10:5 tells us that each clan has their own language.
Why is it important to know lineage in the Bible (Nehemiah 7:5)? Why is the Bible not always in chronological order (1 Corinthians 10:11-12)?

Lacking trust in God’s faithfulness is disobedience
Genesis 11 shows that the world was just as sinful after the flood as it was before the flood. But God had a plan since the beginning. In chapter 11, the people wanted to build a city and make a tower using waterproof materials. This shows their disobedience to God, as well as their doubt that He would keep His promise. Because of this, God confused their language and scattered them throughout the earth. God was showing an act of mercy separating these people before they could become more wicked together.
How often do you doubt the promises of God? What are some ways you can remain faithful to what God has told you (2 Timothy 2:13)?
Human’s disobedience can occur when we stop short
Abram disobeyed God when he stopped at Harran. But God is faithful. After a time, God reminded Abram of the command and promise to go into the land He would show him. Abram also doubted that God would keep His promise when there was a famine in the land, so he moved to Egypt. Abram did not trust that God would provide in the land that He called Abram to. It is because of this lack of faith that Abram felt the need to deceive Pharaoh, saying Sarai was a sister and not his wife.
Why is it a sin to want to protect ourselves from harm, like Abram did when he lied about Sarai (Deuteronomy 1:32-33)?
God’s faithfulness extends
Even Abram separated himself from God, but God remained faithful to his promise. It is through Abraham that Christ would come – this plan was in place since the creation of the world and God worked through Abram’s imperfections and doubts.
How have you seen God’s plan in your life? What are ways you can remind yourself of the faithfulness of God (Ephesians 1:4-5)?
Reflect on God’s faithfulness to us when we do not obey.
How has God shown Himself to be faithful in your life, even though you have disobeyed His words and His commands? How can you take actionable steps today to be obedient to God?
